Peter Thiel invests US$76 million in Vaca Muerta’s top exporter

United States billionaire entrepreneur and venture capitalist Peter Thiel has acquired a US$76 million stake in Argentina’s largest oil exporter, Vista Energy. This transaction represents his inaugural investment in the oil sector and signifies his initial foray into Patagonia’s Vaca Muerta oil field. Thiel Macro LLC, the hedge fund managed by Thiel, secured a 1% ownership in Vista Energy SAB, amounting to approximately 1.2 million shares, as reported at the conclusion of the second quarter. Source disclosed that Thiel Macro LLC obtained the stake in the second quarter of 2026. By June 30, when the quarter concluded, the stake was valued at approximately US$76 million, ranking second only to the fund’s investment in Amazon.com Inc., as reported by the financial outlet. Source also reported that Vista stands as the sole non-U.S. entity within the hedge fund’s portfolio. Vista’s shares experienced a notable increase in New York on Monday, following reports of Thiel’s acquisition, rising 5.6% to US$72.16, marking their highest level in two months, as reported.

Thiel, the proprietor of Palantir and a co-founder of PayPal, has already allocated capital to various energy firms, a sector that has gained significant prominence in recent years. Thiel’s decision to invest in the Argentine oil company further solidifies his commitment to Argentina. The right-wing magnate has engaged with President Javier Milei, various members of his administration, and local political figures in recent months, and has even resided in the country for a few months. Thiel acquired a mansion in a prestigious neighbourhood of Buenos Aires last April and briefly enrolled his children in a local educational institution, despite his stay in Argentina concluding in June. He is anticipated to return in September to deliver a presentation at a Libertarian event. On Monday, a gathering of individuals adorned in costumes resembling Gandalf, the iconic figure from The Lord of the Rings, staged a protest outside Thiel’s residence.

They displayed a banner proclaiming: “You shall not pass, la concha de tu madre.” The concluding segment of the statement represents a well-known Argentine insult, which can be translated literally as “Your mom’s vagina.” The Gandalfs also sang, in Spanish and to the tune of the Village People song YMCA: “If you’re not jumping you own Palantir, and in Argentina you shall not live.” The song alludes to Thiel’s enterprise Palantir, which specialises in data integration and surveillance services. Thiel has openly expressed his admiration for The Lord of the Rings saga. In literature and film, a palantir is depicted as a crystal stone that enables users to observe events occurring in far-off locations or engage in telepathic communication. Palantir has encountered significant examination regarding its involvement in governmental surveillance through artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology, particularly in the United States during the Donald Trump administration, where it has been associated with deportation cases.

The potential entry of Thiel’s Palantir into Argentina generated significant apprehension in late May following the announcement by Milei’s administration of a new initiative termed “social digital twin.” This program is designed to utilise citizens’ data to create simulations of possible social scenarios with AI, with the objective of enhancing public policies. Some critics have associated the announcement with Palantir’s provision of AI surveillance services, noting that the company provides a comparable service under the same name and that Thiel was present in the country at that time. However, the government has refuted any claims regarding Thiel’s involvement, along with that of any other external company. The program has not yet been developed.
