President Javier Milei is set to journey to Miami this Saturday to engage in a high-level regional security summit organized by US President Donald Trump, marking yet another foreign excursion in his increasingly proactive diplomatic agenda. The meeting is scheduled to occur at Trump National Doral Miami, the golf resort owned by the US President in Doral, Florida. This event is being organized by Washington as a component of the larger “Shield of the Americas” initiative, which seeks to enhance collaboration on security, migration, and organized crime throughout the Western Hemisphere. The summit occurs in the context of increased global tensions stemming from the military escalation in the Middle East, initiated by air strikes from the United States and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the death of several individuals, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Argentina elevated its security alert status last Saturday at the directive of Milei following the initial bombing raid by the US and Israel. The Security Ministry has intensified monitoring at key sites, such as the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires and various Jewish community institutions, referencing historical instances of terrorist attacks within the nation.
Washington has characterized the Miami gathering as a chance to “promote freedom, security and prosperity” throughout the region and enhance collaboration among aligned governments. The upcoming meeting is set to convene a coalition of leaders largely in accord with Washington, whereas significant regional players like Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia are anticipated to be absent from the proceedings. In addition to Milei, a number of Latin American leaders are set to attend, including Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz, Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves, the Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader, Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, Honduras’ President Nasry Asfura, Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino, Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and Chile’s president-elect José Antonio Kast, who will assume office next week. The initiative is perceived as an integral component of Washington’s overarching strategy to mitigate China’s growing economic and strategic influence in Latin America, especially in areas like energy, infrastructure, and critical minerals.
Prior to the trip, Milei emphasized Argentina’s alignment with Washington’s strategic priorities in his opening address to Congress on March 1. The US Ambassador Peter Lamelas was also received at the Quinta de Olivos presidential residence. Following the summit in Florida, the President will proceed to New York for Argentina Week, a gathering designed to unite investors, banks, and business leaders to highlight the nation’s economic and financial prospects. The event is scheduled to take place from March 9 to March 12. Milei is expected to be present at Kast’s inauguration on March 11 during his return to Argentina. The visit will signify one of over a dozen excursions to the United States by the Argentine leader since assuming office.
In his address to Congress last weekend, Milei urged Argentina to establish its “strategic alliance” with the United States as a “state policy.” The leader of La Libertad Avanza stated, “the South Atlantic is the strategic battleground of the coming decades,” contending that Argentina must position itself as a “player” in the region. “Trade routes, natural resources, maritime sovereignty, and the increasing presence of actors who do not align with our values.” Whoever wields control over it will govern a crucial segment of international trade. “Argentina must assume that role,” he contended. “We must create the century of the Americas: Make Americas Great Again, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego,” declared Milei. “We possess the essential minerals that are required by the West. We possess the energy resources — gas, oil, nuclear power, and renewable energy — necessary to support extensive production chains. He also emphasized Argentina’s geographical location at the southern extremity of the continent, pointing out that the nation has “access to two oceans and a presence in Antarctica.”
