Milei to renew US visit to meet Trump and draw 2026 World Cup

President Javier Milei is organizing another visit to the United States to engage in the draw for the 2026 World Cup alongside his American counterpart, Donald Trump. The draw for the World Cup, the foremost tournament in international football, is scheduled for December 5 at 2pm, to be held at the concert hall of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The tournament is being hosted by the United States in conjunction with Canada and Mexico.

Trump, as reports indicate, personally selected the Kennedy Center for the draw, aiming to showcase his capacity to “restore American global leadership” in the realm of sports as well. The draw will convene heads of state, officials, FIFA footballing figures, and segments of the global sporting and media establishment — a platform that Milei is eager to leverage. The global focus on the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, ensures a degree of visibility that surpasses that of conventional diplomatic gatherings.

Government sources indicated that Milei is expected to observe the draw from the presidential box, in the company of Trump. This marks Milei’s 15th visit to the United States since assuming office in December 2023. The Casa Rosada anticipates that the concluding elements of its trade agreement with the US will be finalized by that time, paving the way for a potential signing ceremony.

The 2026 World Cup, featuring 48 teams and 16 venues across the three host nations, is set to commence with its opening match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, culminating in the final at MetLife Stadium in New York.
