President Javier Milei has commended his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump for the significant apprehension of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, underscoring his alignment with Washington. In remarks during an interview with a streaming channel on Tuesday, Milei asserted that Trump is “redesigning the world order” and taking a stand against what he referred to as “murderous socialism.” However, the libertarian leader clarified that, despite Argentina’s geopolitical alignment with the United States, his government will maintain its trade ties with China. “Trump is redesigning the world order, no longer thinking in terms of globalization to pass onto geopolitical terms and part of that discussion is to end murderous socialism, whether it calls itself Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua,” stated Milei in an interview.
The President of Argentina emphasized the robustness of the bilateral ties between Buenos Aires and Washington, asserting that his administration’s position had been established prior to his assumption of office. “A reordering is evident, highlighting that certain players are more strategically positioned than their counterparts. We adopted a clear stance before being elected; our geopolitical alliance was part of our electoral platform,” he affirmed. Milei argued that he has “always” spoken of a “geopolitical alliance because commercial questions run parallel.” However, the leader of La Libertad Avanza asserted that severing connections with Beijing would constitute a significant error, notwithstanding Washington’s intention to curtail Chinese influence in the Americas. “I will maintain the trade connections with China.” Milei asserted, “In fact, the United States has trade links with China.”
Milei provided his perspective on the operation in Caracas that resulted in the detention of Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cicilia Flores, articulating his unequivocal support for the action undertaken by the United States. Milei acknowledged the death of 40 individuals during the operation, characterizing the US capture mission as a “surgical” act of “admirable precision.” Of the 40 deceased, he noted that 32 were Cuban, as stated by Milei, specifying that they were military personnel. “We’re discussing a dictatorship, a terrorist narco-state,” he remarked in reference to Maduro’s Venezuela.
When questioned regarding the US-Venezuela agreement involving the interim leader Delcy Rodríguez’s government, which stipulates that Caracas will supply between 30 million and 50 million barrels of oil to the United States, Milei dismissed criticisms that suggested Washington’s intentions were merely to seize that resource. “It’s foolish to claim that they seek to appropriate the oil,” he asserted, contending that the creation of wealth relies on the respect for private property, institutions, and life itself.
